In June of 2021, Charlie Istak moved to Garden Spot Village. He searched for a Christ-honoring environment where he and his wife could retire in community. Once settled in his new home, Charles looked to make connections and stay active. The first stops were a prayer meeting and then the Wellness Center.
Charlie was delighted to see all of the available state-of-the-art equipment. He spoke with the entire team in Wellness: Andrea, Greg, Joanne, and Lauren. They were all enthusiastic about lending a helping hand and suggested coaching tips to stay active.
Joanne worked closest with Charlie and discovered that he was a three-time medalist at the Senior Games before moving to Garden Spot Village. The Senior Games is a competitive sports competition for adults over 50 years of age.
Charlie persisted in training for the Senior Games in the softball throw, football throw, javelin throw, and running competitions. He was delighted by how accommodating and kindhearted Joanne was as she assisted him in preparation for the gold.
When the first week of May 2022 arrived, Charles was honored to represent Garden Spot Village at the Lancaster County Senior Games. He had nine months of training and a cross with Jesus’ name written on his shoe — aiming for the gold.
“Far be it from me; for those who honor Me I will honor.” (1 Samuel 2:30 NKJV)
This was the thought at the forefront of Charlie’s mind while participating. Charlie won the gold in Softball Throw and Football Throw with God’s grace. But unfortunately, the weather was unfavorable for the Javelin Throw and Running Events, which canceled those competitions.
When asked about his accomplishments Charlie responded, “I am most grateful to the wellness center while giving glory to God.”
The staff in the Wellness Center are incredible. The desire the team members display to keep the whole person healthy through showing Christ’s love and physical fitness shine bright to all who utilize the space.
