In this month’s Endeavor, we join residents who went to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, including Cheryl Joyner, a retired Pennsylvania school teacher who finds purpose in visiting locations she once taught in lessons. How do you endeavor to live with purpose?
Cheryl was an elementary school teacher for 27 years. For 15 of those years, she taught her fourth graders about Pennsylvania. She taught the history of the state including everything from William Penn and the colony’s founding to the landscape’s topography, which included the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, despite having taught lessons on the location for many years, Cheryl never had the chance to visit the picturesque area.
When Cheryl read that there was an opportunity to visit the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania with Garden Spot, she and her husband Jim signed up immediately.
Being a student of life, Cheryl appreciated learning further information about the Pine Creek Gorge, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the wildlife that inhabits the area. After traveling through the gorge and seeing the majestic sights, the group went to Leonard Harrison State Park to overlook the monumental landscape.
Interacting with other Garden Spot Residents was even more exciting than visiting a location she had dreamed of visiting for years. There are over 1,000 people who live at Garden Spot Village, and each person has their own uniquely engaging story, which is always a blessing to hear.
