I Spent the Morning with Garden Spot at Home and Here Are 3 Things I Learned

Clients become like family.  Early on a Tuesday morning I met a Garden Spot Village At Home caregiver outside her first client’s house. She gave me a quick overview of what she does to help the client, and then, in we went so I could meet the client and his wife.

“You’re going to love them. They’re like family,” the caregiver mentioned as we walked through the door into their house. She was right. The loving familiarity was noticeable right away; it felt like we were dropping by for a visit with a lifelong friend.

The TV was on in the background, the smell of breakfast filled the house, and I was promptly sent to the porch to see how the begonias were faring. As the caregiver helped the client get ready for the day, I could hear them checking up on each other’s life events, lighthearted banter, and laughter – lots of laughter. It felt like we should be settling in for a morning of visiting, but soon enough it was time to say our goodbyes and head on to the next client’s home.

Garden Spot Village At Home Caregivers Stay Busy! I was with the caregiver all morning, and I can say that not one second of her time was wasted. The morning flew by! From the moment she stepped into a client’s home, she was working, whether that was helping the client pick their outfit for the day, making and cleaning up breakfast, or leading the client in various physical therapy exercises, the tasks – no matter how many – were all completed with so much joy and intentionality, but also somehow with such swiftness and ease.

Personalization is key. Everybody is different, and everybody has different needs. Because of this, every Garden Spot Village At Home visit looks vastly different from the last, as every visit is personalized to fit the client’s needs. At one client’s house the caregiver might be separating food out to be put into the freezer. At another, the might be reminding the client to take their morning pills before they finish their orange juice while preparing eggs just to the client’s liking. Or, she may even grease the birdhouse pole to keep the squirrels away – whatever is needed! It is all about knowing the small details of someone’s everyday life in such a way that they can uphold their independence. The caregivers know their clients as more than just the person behind a care plan or checklist. They know the details of their clients’ lives enough to make their visits feel like coming home.
